12 years ago, Targi Pomorskie Sp. z o.o. [Pomeranian Fairs Limited Liability Company] together with the Association for Protection of National Material Heritage undertook the challenge of organizing the Nationwide Competition “Modernization of the Year”.
The Competition targets investors, contractors and designers.
The objective of the Competition is to select and reward construction undertakings, completed in a given year, which are distinguished by their special values. Newly-built properties cannot participate in the Competition.
The idea behind the Competition is to foster and support activities that save buildings and facilities of national heritage and promote modernization, refurbishment and extension of facilities and equipment in order to obtain a useable and aesthetic effect, without investments in brand new constructions.
In the Competition awards are granted for a given modernization, refurbishment, restoration of a building to the investor, contractor and author of the project. There are 13 categories in the Competition, in each of them there is one grand award, the title of the “Modernization of the Year” and one Distinction. Categories: housing buildings, hospitality industry buildings, industrial and engineering facilities, public utility facilities, educational facilities, culture, sports, health and recreation facilities, environment protection facilities, historical buildings, façades and thermo-renovations, most interesting modernizations and interior adaptations, revitalization of urban facilities and complexes, modernization of roads and bridges, sacral buildings.
The Competition’s Organizing Committee works together with central and local authorities and numerous institutions. Selection and the award presentation ceremony in all editions of the Competition takes place in halls of the Royal Castle in Warsaw. The ceremony is dignified by the presence of representatives of ministries and other institutions supporting the Competition.
The importance of the Competition, as well as its scope, has been constantly growing for years. This is evidenced by the ever larger number of applications, from 18 in 1996 to 621 in 2007. The Competition consists of two stages; in the first stage the applications of buildings are sent in, and upon meeting qualifying criteria they are admitted to the Final.
In the previous edition of the “Modernization of the Year 2007”, the qualifying criteria for the Final were met by 115 buildings and facilities from all over the country. Following the suit of the Nationwide Competition, local and regional competitions are organized to promote local initiatives and achievements. Such a large number of applications prove that the Competition is enjoying a special place and recognition among investors, contractors and designers of rebuilt, modernized and refurbished buildings and facilities.
